Vateris: Turning industrial CO₂ into high-performance construction materials
Challenge:
Reducing the carbon footprint of cement and concrete requires solutions that address industrial CO₂ emissions while preserving the strength and durability of construction materials.
Solution:
Vateris has pioneered a breakthrough process that converts flue gas CO2 into vaterite-based calcium carbonate made from carbon dioxide that can be added to ready-mix and pre-cast concrete to improve its strength, and to reduce the amount of cement used in its production. From the gypsum feedstock, a sulphate co-product is generated to valorise waste and deliver a closed-loop, low energy and bolt-on process to existing cement plants.
QUOTE:
- Alfonso Paradinas, Chief Marketing & Innovation Officer, Holcim:
“By integrating CO2 mineralization, Vateris’ technology has the ability to reduce the cement used in concrete and lower its carbon footprint. This investment in the company’s breakthrough innovation adds to the wide range of decarbonization technologies that we are scaling up for the built environment.”
